I've only just seen this post, I hope it answers your question and helps you out before your son's birthday! As you've probably realised by now everything to do with children, car seats, school, milk powder and toys are all expensive in China. Finding good quality of any of these things is another challenge. There are a few places in town where you can find town, of various prices and quality. Da fui yen and mama baobao( opposite kingfisher, the also have a smaller one at Holiday plaza and another one up the street of Da fui yen I believe) are two places where you can find a selection of toys of average prices and quality. In holiday Plaza there's a book shop (pok art) it's a little expensive, but you can find english story books there and various random toys and craft bits, but expensive. You could always take a look in Lihe and King century for the "imported" toys, but be prepared to feel like you've been robbed, the prices are insane.
From previous posts I see you have a Chinese wife, so my best advice is taobao. It's a chinese website that's MUCH cheaper than the shops here, in fact that's where a few of the shops get their stock from in the first place. The products are of all prices and quality, from cheap and fake will break in two weeks, to expensive and made to export that will last forever. However it is all in Chinese, for those of us who aren't fluent in the reading and writing of Chinese it can be a challenge, but I can tell you for sure that this is where all us Mom's get our toys, clothes, pushchairs and so on from :)
I hope this has helped a little and I hope I haven't replied too late! Best of luck.
thanks a lot Lucy!!!!
Either a day trip to Toys r Us in Hong Kong or Taobao (as Lucy mentioned) are going to be your best bet.
