Early in September my brother, who lives in Beijing, celebrated his fiftieth birthday. Maybe "celebration" isn't the term that he would use; perhaps "endured" is more like it. To help him bear this burden, I accepted his offer of a free trip to Japan - I mean, after all, what are brothers for? Not just any trip, but a bicycle trip roughly planned from Osaka to Tokyo.
